Male Model: Gynecomastia Surgery

Overview

Excess fat and pronounced breast tissue within the chest is often cited as both a source of shame and self-consciousness for both teens and adult men. Gynecomastia may result from an imbalance of the hormones testosterone and estrogen, which can occur due to many reasons, including genetics, drug usage and other external factors.

Key signs of Gynecomastia include:

  • Abundant localized fat in the chest area
  • Over-development of male glandular breast tissue
  • Excess male breast skin

Those suffering from Gynecomastia, also known as “man boobs,” will often avoid warm weather social outings, shirtless physical activities and even intimacy with their partner in an effort to hide their abnormality. With physical appearance bearing such a large importance towards professional and social circles in New Jersey, many men turn to Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Robert Morin to decrease the size of their male breasts and sculpt a more defined chest they’ll feel proud to show off.

Prime Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery

If you are considering gynecomastia surgery to combat your excess breast tissue, it is important to Dr. Morin that you have full comprehension of the surgery, risks, benefits, other treatment options, and what your chest can realistically look like post-surgery.

The initial step on the road to gynecomastia surgery is to examine the severity of your case. The optimal candidate for this procedure would be men possessing firm skin in the area that can tighten once the excess breast tissue has been removed.

As with all invasive surgeries, gynecomastia surgery carries the minor risks of infection, bleeding, poor scarring and contour irregularities. Dr. Morin will review your medical history and determine if the procedure is appropriate for you.

How is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

Prospective clients are first assessed by Dr. Morin for their severity of Gynecomastia. Dr. Morin will classify cases of gynecomastia into three different categories: level I, level II, and level III. These levels range from the least severe (level I), in which just a small amount of excess tissue develops, to level III, in which a prominent female-looking breast forms. Additional consideration will be given to specific issues such as reduction of puffy nipples, breast asymmetry and inverted nipples.

Level I cases are usually treated with chest liposuction using two small incisions. Level II cases, may require slightly larger incisions. Level III, the most pronounced and rare form of gynecomastia, requires many of the same types of incisions used during female breast reduction procedures, depending on the amount of extra skin that must be removed.

Results from your gynecomastia surgery will be visible immediately. During your pre-op appointment, Dr. Morin and his medical staff will provide comprehensive directions for caring for the surgical site and prescriptions for medications to stimulate your healing process and reduce infection risks. Naturally, there will be some degree of swelling directly after surgery which will fade over time, along with the incision lines. In terms of scarring, while a majority of incisions from male breast reduction surgery can be cloaked in your body’s natural contours, some scars may be discernible. Although the scars from surgery will be permanent, they will continue to fade as time passes. Dr. Morin will check the surgical site during your post-operative appointments to ensure you are healing properly.

Recovery Period

After surgery, you will have dressings or bandages applied to your incisions. You will be fitted with a supportive compression garment for approximately six weeks in order to ensure a flat and symmetric contour and to reduce swelling as quickly as possible. In severe cases, patients will have drains for the first few days. During the healing process, it is critical that you do not subject your incisions to unnecessary force or motion. While all patients recover from surgery at their own pace, Dr. Morin provides the following estimates of when you can return to work. The estimates are:

  • Level I Surgery– approximately two to four days.
  • Level II Surgery – approximately three to five days.
  • Level III Surgery – approximately five to eight days.

In most surgical cases, the results you get from gynecomastia surgery are permanent. However, if the gynecomastia was caused by the use of prescription medications, drugs (including anabolic steroids) and/or weight gain, the reoccurring use of these substances or gaining additional weight could cause the gynecomastia to re-develop.

Dr. Morin also treats patients who underwent gynecomastia surgery by another doctor and are interested in improving the results. Revision gynecomastia surgeries are more complex as scar tissue needs to be addressed along with other aesthetic issues that may not have been addressed in the original surgery.
