Lip augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure as it can dramatically enhance facial beauty with minimal swelling, bruising or “down-time.” Most commonly this procedure is performed on younger patients who have naturally thin lips and are looking to add volume. Lip augmentation can also be used to reduce vertical lip lines and enhance aging, thinning lips. Dr. Robert Morin, a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the head and face, is pleased to offer this procedure at both his New York City and New Jersey offices. As a surgeon with extensive training in craniofacial surgery and facial cosmetic surgery, Dr. Morin maintains his patient’s safety, as well as their cosmetic goals, as a top priority.

As we age, our lips may thin or we may experience vertical lip lines due to the fact that over time both our skin and lips loose elasticity and volume. Added factors that may contribute to these cosmetic issues are genetics, smoking and sun exposure. No matter what of the reason, lip augmentation can be an excellent answer to attaining fuller, but still natural appearing lips.

Non-surgical injectable fillers are typically used in lip enhancement procedures today. Although there are several types of injectable fillers that can be used to add volume to lips, the most commonly used products contain hyaluronic acid. As a naturally occurring substance in the body, hyaluronic acid gives skin a healthy, youthful and smooth appearance. When injected into the lip and mouth area it can add natural looking volume. These injectable are often known as “HA fillers”.

Some HA fillers are thick and add substantial volume. These fillers are used deep in face. Other fillers are specially designed as a lighter mixture of hyaluronic acid to add a subtle amount of fullness. These gentler products are what we commonly use in the lower eyelids and lips. HA fillers work by injecting a moderate blend of hyaluronic acids just under the skin in order to obtain a fuller, more youthful appearance without the need for surgery. HA filler treatments can also smooth out fine lines in the lip area. HA lip fillers such as Juvéderm Ultra or Restylane Silk have been proven to last up to a year.

Although collagen was at one time a frequently used dermal filler for lip enhancement, it is not typically used today due to the fact that there are safer options available that have longer lasting affects, such as HA fillers. In addition, techniques such as fat injections and implants are less frequently used in order to add volume to lips. The results from these procedures are not as consistent compared to HA fillers. Moreover, these techniques provide a greater risk of side effects as well.
