A mastopexy, otherwise known as a breast lift, can rejuvenate your overall look by raising your breasts, and giving you a fuller and more youthful appearance. As women age, is it common for their breasts to begin to sag, losing their original shape and firmness. This can alter a woman’s body shape, and not only change the way she looks, but also the way she feels. While breast implants are used to increase the size of a woman’s breasts, a lift is necessary if the breasts are droopy or the nipple position is low and needs to be elevated. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons statistics show that the number of breast lift procedures has grown 70% since 2000.

Dr. Robert J. Morin, a highly trained board-certified plastic surgeon that performs a wide variety of plastic surgery procedures, is pleased to offer mastopexy surgery to his New Jersey clients. Voted by his peers as one of Castle Connolly’s “Top Doctors” in Plastic Surgery in the NJ metro area, Dr. Morin’s extensive experience in cosmetic surgery allows him to offer his patients superior results. Dr. Morin is committed to his patients, ensuring each person’s goals are a high priority.

Mastopexy Breast Lift

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that raises the breast by repositioning the nipple areola complex and removing excess skin. This procedure allows Dr. Morin to tighten the tissue around the breast, which reshapes and supports a beautiful new breast shape. Many women experience drooping breasts that have lost their firmness and shape. This can be due to several reasons such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, aging, genetics or the simple effect of gravity over time. If a woman develops an enlarged areola, this can be addressed during the breast lift procedure as well.

It is important to note that breast lift surgery does not alter the overall breast size in a significant way. It also does not significantly affect the appearance or fullness of the upper part of the breast. In order to increase the breast size or the upper pole fullness, one would have to have a breast augmentation with an implant in addition to a breast lift. On the contrary, women who are interested in smaller breasts, can combine a mastopexy with a breast reduction.

Mastopexy Surgery

The technique used in mastopexy or breast lift surgery depends on several factors. The amount and the quality of the breast skin that needs to be excised must be considered, in addition to the distance between the nipple and the chest wall. Dr. Morin’s goal is always to create a beautifully shaped breast that will maintain its contour for a long time. Occasionally, techniques that require fewer scars, including the periareolar or vertical mastopexy, are possible. However, if there is a large amount of thin, excess skin, following multiple pregnancies or massive weight loss, then a more traditional mastopexy with the classic inverted T or anchor scars is necessary. It must be understood that in plastic surgery, we are constantly trading scars for shape and although there are scars in mastopexy, the benefit is a skillfully contoured breast that can truly rejuvenate a woman’s appearance. Despite the scarring, prospective patients should know that most mastopexy patients are so happy with the shape of their new breasts, they are rarely bothered by the well-concealed scars.

An augmentation is often desired at the same time as a mastopexy. This is a more challenging procedure and should only be performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Morin. Since an augmentation mastopexy requires moving in two directions at once, up (higher) and out (bigger), it is important to understand that the risk of revision surgery is increased compared to when a lift and an augmentation are performed at separate times. Staging the procedures, however, guarantees the need for two surgeries, while the benefit of an augmentation mastopexy is a high likelihood of obtaining the breasts you desire after only one surgical procedure.

After Mastopexy Surgery

Once your breast lift procedure is complete, dressings and bandages will be applied to the incisions and a small drain may be placed as well. As your breasts heal, it’s helpful to wear a sports bra to minimize the possibility of a widening of the scars, pain, and swelling. Since each case is somewhat different, your post-operative care will be tailored to you, and Dr. Morin will give you the exact instructions you will need.
