As we age, our faces start to reflect a lifetime of muscle contractions – cries, smiles, frowns, and furrows. We see it on our foreheads, our cheeks, and around our eyes. One of the most effective and safe methods at combating this is through the injection of dermal filler gels.

One such gel is Juvéderm, an FDA-approved compound derived from hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring sugar within our bodies. These sugars work by holding in water at the site in question, restoring volume to the cheek area and smoothing out wrinkles and creases that have built up over a lifetime. Results can be seen immediately. While every patient’s body is unique, results generally last for approximately one year.

Juvéderm for Nasolabial Folds

While other areas of the face may benefit from different hyaluronic-based gels, Juvéderm is typically the preferred treatment for the nasolabial folds: those lines that form when we smile between our nose and upper lip, and tend to become more pronounced as we age. With today’s medical technology, solutions to these little indicators of age are becoming increasingly easier to overcome with non-invasive techniques.

Comparison of Treated and Untreated Smile Lines

The above photograph was taken to demonstrate the dramatic before-and-after difference, within one session, that Juvéderm has on the appearance of deep facial lines. In this case, Dr. Morin injected the right nasolabial fold with the filler, which produced immediate results. The treated right side serves as a stark contrast to the untreated fold on the left side. The patient’s left fold was treated immediately after the photograph was taken.

As with all cosmetic procedures, it’s important to discuss your options and medical background with a highly trained board certified expert. Dr. Robert Morin is a board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience with cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, serving residents of New York City and New Jersey. His expertise and experience make him the perfect healthcare professional to discuss your options and goals with.

A Juvéderm treatment is safe and well-tolerated. However, you may not be the best candidate if any of the following applies to you:

  • currently taking medication that prolongs bleeding
  • you have recently had other skin surface treatments
  • you currently have a skin infection or a bad sunburn
  • you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • you have a history of multiple allergies or allergies with anaphylaxis

The procedure itself is relatively straightforward, although some minor discomfort during and afterward is commonly reported. Some of this pain is mitigated through the product’s inclusion of lidocaine, although another local anesthetic is sometimes used if the patient’s desires.

In the few days following the procedure, it’s advised that you avoid exposure to the sun, certain medications, alcohol, and strenuous exercise. Negative reactions to Juvéderm are typically mild, and generally do not last longer than a week. Side effects may include:

  • swelling
  • bruising
  • pain
  • redness
  • discoloration
  • infection
  • itching
  • firmness

If reactions persist longer than a week, it’s important that you come back and speak to us as soon as possible.
